Best Day Trips and Weekend Getaways from Karachi

One of the underrated things about Karachi is how much is within reach of the city. Within two to five hours you can be on a quiet beach, at a boat launch to a snorkelling island, walking through an ancient necropolis, or standing on a cool hilltop while the plains bake below. Here is our local guide to the best day trips and weekend getaways from Karachi, with honest drive times and which vehicle actually suits each one.

Beaches within an hour

French Beach and Hawke’s Bay are the closest genuine beach escapes from the city, roughly forty five minutes to an hour from central Karachi along the coastal road. French Beach has a scattering of private huts and a calmer, less crowded feel than the city beaches, while Hawke’s Bay is wider and more popular with families on weekends. Sandspit, right next to Hawke’s Bay, is known for its long flat sand and is a favourite for an early morning or sunset drive.

These are easy half day trips. A comfortable sedan handles the drive fine, though the sandy approach roads near the huts are a little easier in something with slightly higher clearance.

Boating and snorkelling at Churna Island

Mubarak Village, about an hour and a half from Karachi along the coastal highway, is the launch point for boat trips out to Churna Island, one of the few spots near Karachi with genuinely clear water for snorkelling. Boats are arranged at the village itself, so the drive is really just the first leg of the day. This works best as a full day out, leaving Karachi early morning and returning by evening.

Because the return is often late and you are carrying snorkelling gear, wet clothes and a group of friends or family, a roomier vehicle makes the day easier.

Gorakh Hill Station: a genuine change of scenery

Gorakh Hill Station, up in the Kirthar range, is the cool hill station of Sindh, and it genuinely feels like a different country from the heat of Karachi. It sits at around 5,700 feet, with temperatures that can drop close to freezing in winter. The drive from Karachi is around five to six hours each way through Dadu, so this is a long full day trip, or better as an overnight if you want to enjoy the hilltop rather than rush back down before dark.

The road up to Gorakh has some steep and winding sections, so a capable SUV is the right choice here rather than a standard sedan.

Thatta, Makli and the Shah Jahan Mosque

Thatta, about an hour and a half to two hours from Karachi, is one of the richest heritage stops within reach of the city. The Makli Necropolis here is one of the largest funerary sites in the world, thousands of tombs spanning centuries of Sindhi history, and it is genuinely striking to walk through. The Shah Jahan Mosque in Thatta, built in the seventeenth century, is known for its acoustics and intricate tile work.

This is an easy, comfortable day trip for a couple or a small family, and a sedan or a family SUV both work well on the well paved route out.

Keenjhar Lake

Keenjhar Lake, roughly two to two and a half hours from Karachi, is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Pakistan and a popular weekend spot for boating and birdwatching, especially in the cooler months when migratory birds arrive. It makes for a relaxed day trip, with boat rides available at the lake itself, or a pleasant overnight if you want to catch sunrise and sunset over the water on the same trip.

Kirthar National Park

Kirthar National Park, on the way toward the Gorakh route, is one of the oldest wildlife reserves in Pakistan, home to the Sindh ibex and a genuinely rugged, dramatic landscape of dry hills and valleys. It suits a group interested in wildlife and hiking more than a casual day out, and a 4WD capable vehicle is the sensible choice for the terrain inside the park itself.

Kund Malir and Hingol National Park

Kund Malir, on the Makran coastal highway, and Hingol National Park further along the same route, are the most dramatic landscapes within striking distance of Karachi, with pristine beaches and a genuinely otherworldly stretch of coastline. This is a longer coastal trip, around three to four hours each way, and really deserves an overnight rather than a rushed there and back.

The distance, the road conditions along parts of the coastal highway and the appeal for larger groups make this the trip where a proper 4WD SUV or a van for a bigger group makes the most sense.
